Mathew Jonson

Mathew Jonson

Mathew Jonson is a singular voice in electronic music, renowned for fusing populist dancefloor energy with rich musicality and a lifelong devotion to analog sound. A classically trained pianist and jazz drummer, Jonson first broke through in the early 2000s with tracks like Alpine Rocket (with Luciano) and solo releases on Perlon, Kompakt, and M_nus, quickly earning acclaim as Groove Magazine’s Best Producer (2004). He went on to co-found Wagon Repair in 2005, cementing his role as both innovator and mentor, while unleashing iconic tracks such as Marionette and Decompression. Known for his dynamic, fully live sets—hailed among Resident Advisor’s Top 20—Jonson has also shaped the sound of collaborative projects including Cobblestone Jazz, Midnight Operator, and Modern Deep Left Quartet. His discography spans celebrated albums like Agents of Time (2010) and On Her Blurry Pictures (2013), a landmark Fabric84 mix recorded live at the club’s 15th birthday, and explorations under his alias Freedom Engine (A Box Full of Magic, 2019). Beyond the stage, Jonson launched Freedom Engine Academy in 2020 to mentor the next generation of producers, carrying forward his legacy of pushing boundaries while giving back to the global techno community.
